This is a sample 6 session plan for a fictitious client who has started to feel panic attack symptoms at work because of stress. She supervises frontline customer service staff. The client currently takes anxiety medication and her doctor has recommended that she speak to someone for additional support.
Intake and review of desired outcomes. Discussion of career goals, skills, interests and experience. Review of coping and self-care plans for stress at work. Client really feels ready for a change, but doesn't know what.
Using one of several options, debrief a personality assessment (eg. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) to learn more about client preferences and natural responses to stress. Link to possible career options.
Discuss client's future plans for work and life. Client describes preferred work environment, schedule, level of responsibility and income potential. Client identifies that she'd like to move away from frontline service to operational improvement.
Client identifies she does not want to change industries, and lists several options within the customer service field for operational support, including project work, scheduling, and staff training. She realizes that when she participates in these kinds of tasks, she doesn't have the same panic symptoms.
Client is now highly motivated to change roles and we review the process of networking effectively, using and growing her existing list of contacts connected to her desired jobs. She develops a short list of people to talk to to learn about the specific skills and traits of successful candidates.
We review client's application materials and identify several ways to more closely connect the content to her target roles in operations. Together, we prepare interview notes in anticipation of upcoming networking meetings.
